Connecting All the Elements

Remember that, as shown below, elements 1 and 2 get a period after them. Elements 3-9 are connected by commas, with a period only showing up after the last element (usually element 9, location).

Author.
Title of source.
Title of container,
Other contributors,
Version,
Number,
Publisher,
Publication date,
Location.

If you cannot find one of the elements, just leave that element out of your citation. For example, if cannot identify an author, skip author and start your citation with the title.

Containers

Core Element 3 is the title of container. It is always italicized.

But what's a "container" anyway?

The publication that you found the source in is the container. A chapter (your source) is found in a book (container); an episode (your source) is found in a TV series (container); an article (your source) is found in a journal (container).

For example, if you wanted to cite an episode of a TV series, then the container would be the name of the series: Stranger Things.
