Badge Information
Students who participate in the Leadership Badge will emerge with the ability to demonstrate critical leadership skills through community engagement and self-reflection. Leadership is a critical competency, recognized by NACE as a top skill that employers seek in college graduates. Completion of the activities and assignments will prepare students as leaders and promote career preparation. Students who successfully complete the Leadership Development Credential offered by the JLC/CDC will automatically receive the Leadership Badge.
Earn the Badge!
Choose and complete four of the following tasks to earn the Communication Badge!
- Attend a student senate meeting
- Volunteer for a community event or cause or participate in service learning
- Create a leadership statement in consultation with the JLC
- Conduct an informational interview with a campus leader and upload a brief reflection
- Complete a task of your choice that represents leadership in your field. NOTE: Before committing to a task, check in with the Career Development Center to have it approved.
Developing Leadership Competencies
NACE defines leadership as the ability to recognize and capitalize on personal and team strengths to achieve organizational goals. Exploring this competency and evaluating sample behaviors can help you to apply leadership skills in professional settings.
Why is leadership important?
- More than 80% of employers surveyed in the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) job outlook survey indicated that they seek “leadership” on a candidates resume
- Research show that holding a leadership position is the top factor after major when deciding between equally qualified candidates
Sample Behaviors:
- Inspire, persuade, and motivate self and others under a shared vision.
- Seek out and leverage diverse resources and feedback from others to inform direction.
- Use innovative thinking to go beyond traditional methods.
- Serve as a role model to others by approaching tasks with confidence and a positive attitude.
- Motivate and inspire others by encouraging them and by building mutual trust.
- Plan, initiate, manage, complete and evaluate projects.
Ideas on how to engage in Leadership at Alfred University:
- Become involved with campus organizations and clubs and consider taking on a leadership role.
- Participate in events and programming offered by the Judson Leadership Center.
- Engage in service-learning opportunities on and off campus.
- Cement your commitment to developing leadership skills by participating in the Leadership Development Credential offered by the JLC and CDC.
- Take part in the Women’s Leadership Academy (open to all genders).
- Engage and connect with campus leadership.
